Twelve members of the U.S. Congress sent a letter to Formula 1 owner Liberty Media on Wednesday demanding answers for why it is excluding Andretti Global from the sport, giving the American team powerful new allies in its bid to enter F1. "Our team, Andretti Global, is part of every major racing discipline in the world. Last fall Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, accepted the racing team's push to join the grid, saying it met the criteria. Because we have an obligation to protect the American consumer, to protect American companies, and that is our first allegiance. The move marks an earthquake for F1 as Newey is widely regarded as the greatest car designer in the sport.

CNN —Red Bull has suspended the female employee who accused F1 team principal Christian Horner of inappropriate behavior, according to multiple reports. CNN has been unable to corroborate their authenticity and Red Bull said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on the matter. “The reality is that there was a grievance that was raised, it was dealt with in the most professional manner by the group, not by Red Bull Racing but by the owners of Red Bull GMBH, that appointed an independent KC, that is one of the most reputable KC’s in the land,” Horner said. Formula One's invitation to Andretti Cadillac for an in-person meeting about its application to join the motorsports series was sent via email and landed in a spam folder, which is why Michael Andretti and General Motors representatives never answered the request. The junk email revelation came Friday as Andretti Global sought to clarify two points in the sharply critical document F1 released earlier this week in rejecting the Andretti Cadillac application. An in-person meeting to discuss commercial matters would be and remains of paramount importance to Andretti Cadillac,” the team said. “Andretti Cadillac has been operating with 2026 as the year of entry for many months now," the team said. He then petitioned F1 to expand the grid for what Andretti claims will be a true American team in the series.

Fixed indexed annuity sales brought in a record $95.6 billion, up from 20% from the record hit the year prior. Indexed annuities earn interest that is calculated based on the changes within a market index, such as the S & P 500 or the Nasdaq 100. However, they also receive downside protection: They are credited zero interest if the index their annuity is tracking declines. The term of index annuities typically range from three to 15 years, according to Annuity.org . Fixed indexed annuities can also be complicated, warned David Blanchett, head of retirement research for PGIM DC Solutions.

Formula One set to change sprint format for 2024
  + stars: | 2023-11-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The governing FIA said on Friday its Sporting Advisory Committee would present a final proposal to the F1 Commission in January. "The Commission gave overall support for an update to the sprint format for 2024 to further rationalise the weekend by separating Sprint activities from those for the Grand Prix," the FIA said in a statement. Six of this year's 22 rounds were sprint weekends, including the Qatar Grand Prix in which Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched his third world title on a Saturday. The current format has qualifying for the grand prix on Friday with sprint qualifying and standalone race filling Saturday's schedule. Points could be awarded more widely for the sprint race, with a possible reverse grid element also under consideration.

Formula One trials AI to tackle track limits breaches

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsABU DHABI, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Formula One's governing body is trialling artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle track limits breaches at this weekend's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Paris-based FIA said it would be using 'Computer Vision' technology that uses shape analysis to work out the number of pixels going past the track edge. By the title-deciding Qatar weekend in October there were eight people assigned to assess track limits and monitor 820 corner passes, with 141 reports sent to race control who then deleted 51 laps. Stewards said this month that their inability to properly enforce track limits violations at turn six was "completely unsatisfactory" and a solution needed to be found before the start of next season. Malyon said the extra Computer Vision layer would reduce the number of potential infringements being considered by the ROC, with still fewer then going on to race control for further action.

Hamilton denies Red Bull talks, accuses Horner of 'stirring'

Horner told the Daily Mail newspaper there had been "several conversations over the years" about Hamilton joining the team who are currently dominant with triple world champion Max Verstappen. Most recently, earlier in the year, there was an inquiry about whether there would be any interest," said the team boss. "SERIOUS TALKS"Horner told the Daily Mail that Hamilton, who has not won a race since 2021, also had talks with Ferrari chairman John Elkann earlier in the year. There were definitely conversations, perhaps with (Ferrari team boss Fred) Vasseur, too. Hamilton, who has said he sees himself at Mercedes "until my last days", denied the Ferrari speculation at the time.

Fusion could have an important advantage over today's nuclear fission plants that split atoms, as it does not produce long-lasting radioactive waste. The former secretary of state will announce his plan to lay out the strategy - which foresees commercialization within years, not decades - on Monday on a tour of fusion company Commonwealth Fusion Systems near Boston. "I will have much more to say on the United States’ vision for international partnerships for an inclusive fusion energy future at COP28," Kerry said in a statement. Some critics say fusion will be too expensive and take too long to develop to help in the fight against climate change in the foreseeable future. In 2023, international fusion companies have garnered about $1.4 billion in investments for a total of about $6.21 billion in mostly private money, the Fusion Industry Association said, down from about $2.83 billion in new investment last year.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ferrari rebounded from a disastrous first day of the Las Vegas Grand Prix with a Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. sweep of Friday night qualifying. After the qualifying run, Sainz was struggling to balance the showmanship of F1's first visit to Las Vegas in 41 years and the damage to the sporting element of the biggest spectacle on the series' 22-race calendar. F1 and owner Liberty Media have spent $500 million on the race that uses the Strip and incorporates several Las Vegas landmarks. “But I see the race as a very good opportunity for F1 and I think F1, it's a good thing that's in Las Vegas and I am enjoying coming to Las Vegas. He's been critical of the event since before he even arrived because he believes F1 has put too much emphasis on the entertainment value of the Las Vegas race.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The first Formula One practice of the Las Vegas Grand Prix was halted less than 21 minutes into Thursday night's session after Carlos Sainz Jr. ran over a manhole cover on the track. Race officials released a statement that an inspection by Formula One and FIA determined “a single water valve cover ... Sainz appeared to run over the manhole cover just nine minutes into the practice on the street course that stretches down the famed Strip. The session never resumed, but it took about 11 more minutes for the FIA to cancel the session. Ocon said as he passed Sainz on the track, he believed he hit the dislodged cover.

Track officials repair an area of track surrounding a drain as seen from the McLaren VISTA during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Las Vegas at Las Vegas Strip Circuit on November 16, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Formula 1's return to Las Vegas was thrown into chaos as the opening practice session was cancelled after just eight minutes of action due to a broken drain cover damaging Carlos Sainz's car. Ocon's Alpine then suffered damage under the red flag when it hit the scattered debris left by the Sainz incident. A further 11 minutes passed before a decision taken to cancel the session, with second practice subsequently pushed back two hours from its scheduled start time to 10am. An FIA statement had earlier said: "Following inspection, it was the concrete frame around a manhole cover that has failed.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Formula One is hoping to turn its luck around on the Strip, like so many other Las Vegas visitors who blow a big bankroll soon after they arrive. F1 ran a 90-minute session until 4 a.m. — when the streets had to be returned to the city for morning commuter traffic. A penalty because he ran over a drainage cover on the Las Vegas Strip, something completely out of his control and extremely dangerous considering it penetrated his seat? Because governing body FIA has no mechanism not to penalize a team that makes extensive car changes during a race weekend, Sainz has, of course, been penalized. Las Vegas is the most expensive race to attend to on the 24-event schedule.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 14 (Reuters) - General Motors has formally registered with Formula One's governing body to provide power units to a proposed Andretti Cadillac team from 2028, the U.S. carmaker announced on Tuesday. "We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit," said GM President Mark Reuss in a statement issued ahead of this weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix, one of three races in the United States. "With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we'll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. Formula One will have new engine regulations from 2026, with GM set to be the seventh manufacturer if Andretti secure approval. "Engineering a F1 power unit will advance GM’s expertise in areas including electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls and software systems," the carmaker said.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — General Motors said Tuesday it has registered with Formula One's governing body to become an engine supplier starting in 2028 in what is seen as a huge boost to Michael Andretti's bid to join the global motorsports series. “We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” GM President Mark Reuss said. GM in January announced its partnership with Andretti Global under its Cadillac banner on Andretti's application to join F1. So, I think with that improvement going into next season they can be a real threat. Brawn was also optimistic Ferrari would improve under Fred Vasseur's guidance but recognised Red Bull would not be standing still and had the added benefit of being able to switch attention early to next year's car. Red Bull have so far won 19 of 20 races, with Verstappen triumphant 17 times -- a record for a single season that he can extend in Las Vegas this weekend -- and team mate Sergio Perez twice. Stewards ruled, in a lengthy statement, that Haas had presented no significant and relevant new element that was unavailable to them at the time of the Oct. 22 race in Austin, Texas. The decision was reached after a virtual hearing that started on Wednesday and was deferred to Thursday. Haas, last in the championship, sought the review during last weekend's Sao Paulo Grand Prix because they believed some rivals exceeded track limits without sanction. The U.S.-owned team argued that the track limit infringements were "neither noted, nor investigated nor penalized by the stewards as reflected in the final classification." The stewards found the onboard camera footage of Albon's Williams and following cars was significant but not new, previously unavailable or relevant.

"The revenue service is already organizing the implementation of this minimum taxation on multinationals," she said in an interview on Wednesday. The revenue service did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It advocates that this mechanism will ensure that large multinational companies pay a minimum 15% tax on their profits in all jurisdictions where they operate to deter profit-shifting to tax-favorable locations. The OECD estimates that the global minimum tax, already under way in countries including South Korea and Japan, could generate up to $200 billion in additional annual revenue. She also said Brazil aims to go further in the global tax discussion to reduce differences between advanced and emerging economies and to promote the green agenda.
